Cordova, TN – July 20, 2025
The sports world is mourning the loss of Corey Adams, an 18-year-old rising football star at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), who was tragically shot and killed in Cordova, Tennessee, on the evening of July 19.

A Promising Life Cut Short

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to gunfire around 10:14 PM near Fern Glade Cove. Adams was found with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle stopped at the Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove intersection. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other men sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at local hospitals. Authorities are currently investigating the incident as a homicide.

A Star on and off the Field

Hailing from New Orleans, Corey Adams was a standout defensive lineman at Edna Karr High School, where he led his team to a 2024 state championship. Known for his explosive plays, Adams earned Defensive Player of the Year honors from The Times-Picayune after racking up 47 tackles, 15 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles in his senior year.

A memorable highlight of his career was a 70-yard touchdown return after stripping the ball from a Holy Cross quarterback, showcasing his tenacity and athleticism.

Ranked as the 609th overall recruit and the 57th edge rusher nationally, Adams committed to Ole Miss over offers from LSU, TCU, and Texas A&M. His decision was largely influenced by his connection with defensive line coach Randall Joyner, who believed Adams was a crucial piece of the Rebels’ future defense.

“I Don’t Fear Nobody”

Corey’s confidence and leadership were unmistakable. “I do a lot of wild stuff on the field,” he once said. “I’m aggressive. I’m hard. You can’t make me bow down. Somebody is going to have to surrender when I’m on the field. I don’t fear nobody, and that’s how it’s going to stay.”

He enrolled at Ole Miss in January 2025 as an early enrollee, eager to gain experience ahead of the upcoming college football season.

Remembering Corey Adams

The Ole Miss football program shared their heartbreak on social media, stating:

“While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved.”

On Facebook, Edna Karr High School remembered Corey not just for his talent but for his character:

“Corey Adams was more than a football player. He was a friend, brother, son, student, and an all-around great young man. Words can’t describe this type of pain.”

Final Thoughts

Corey Adams’ untimely death is a devastating blow to his family, teammates, and the broader football community. A young man full of talent, grit, and promise—his life was just beginning. As investigations continue, the legacy of his passion and character will endure.
